  • WorkSafe Inspector application form (this must be submitted in Word format, please do not convert to PDF)
  • Cover letter
  • Resume (including names and contact details of two referees)

You are more than welcome to apply for more than one role if you feel your education, skills and experience are relevant to multiple roles. If you are applying for more than one role then you will be required to select your preferences in the application form.

You will receive an email response to confirm that we have received your application. In the interest of being environmentally friendly, please do not send hard copy applications.

Application Process

You will need to complete the entire application form, attach your resume and a covering letter and forward it to worksafe@dixonappointments.com.au

Please make sure you check the eligibility information before applying.

Allow yourself plenty of time to submit your application. The email system can become very busy especially towards the closing date, so don't leave it until the last minute to submit.

Shortlisting

Initial shortlisting will involve assessment of your application, including your work experience, your qualifications and technical experience within the area.

We know that you'll be keen to hear about the progress of your application and we'll do our best to keep you updated; however please be patient as we receive a high volume of applications and it may take some time to thoroughly review them all.

You will be notified whether or not you will proceed to the next stage in the process - emails are our main communication channel, so check your inbox frequently. Also, check that emails are not being filed through to your junk mail folder.

Assessment Centres

If you are successful at the initial shortlisting stage, you will be invited to attend an assessment centre. This will be a full day session that will include:

  • Online aptitude and behavioral assessments
  • Group activities and individual activities
  • Role play

Assessment Centres are expected to be held in Melbourne from 9th March to 24th March 2016. You must be able to attend the Assessment Centre to move forward in the recruitment process.

Interviews

If you are successful at the secondary shortlisting stage, you will be invited to attend an interview with our recruitment panel.
Interviews are expected to be held from 4th April to 15th April 2016. Interviews will consist of a panel of 2 or 3 people.

Reference, background, police and medical checks will be conducted concurrently with the interview by the selection panel.

Verbal Offers

If you are successful in the selection process, you will receive a verbal offer of employment prior to receiving a formal letter.

Start date

The start date for all successful candidates will be 6th June 2016. Potential candidates must ensure they are available to start on this date.

Probation Period

Due to the nature of the role and the amount of training required, successful candidates will be subject to a probationary period of 6 months from their start date.

Training program

Successful candidates will receive extensive in-house induction training over an approximate 14 week period. Appointment as an inspector will be granted on successful demonstration by the recruit of the competencies required of a WorkSafe inspector.

Training will incorporate both class room and field based activities, and is focussed on the following areas.

  • Organisational and office orientation
  • Occupational Health & Safety Act 2004
  • Role of the inspector
  • Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2007
  • Equipment (Public Safety) Act 1994
  • Dangerous Goods Act 1985 familiarisation
  • Compliance approach including notice writing
  • Tools and systems used by inspectors
  • Investigation skills familiarisation
  • Communication skills

Field coaching placements will generally be undertaken at the office where the candidate is to be placed permanently. These field coaching placements are spread throughout the program.

Time has been allowed for the completion of assessment tasks, so inductees will not be expected to do 'homework'.

Inductees will be based at the WorkSafe Essendon Fields office for a substantial portion of the training period.

Accommodation close to the Essendon Fields office will be arranged for inductees, where regular travel from their home is difficult or unreasonable due to distance.

Diploma of Government

Those appointed will also be required to complete the Diploma of Government (Workplace Inspection) within 3 years of commencement with WorkSafe. The Diploma is conducted in-house, as a part of the role, and participation in and successful completion of the Diploma is a mandatory requirement of the role.

Vehicles - Vehicle and accessories will be provided to successful candidates close to the conclusion of the training program.
