About this publication

Designing workplaces for safer handling of people (formerly known as "Designing workplaces for safer handling of patients and residents") is a publication for planners, facility managers and direct care staff. The publication is intended for those who have design and layout of a current workplace contributing to injuries, organisations designing new facilities or planning renovations, and for workers involved in the planning process for a workplace.

Safe Design for the Health Industry, Victorian Hospital Industry Association (VHIA) - Safety Development Fund
The VHIA Design Advisory Service was funded by WorkSafe Victoria through the Safety Development Fund to deliver a design service to address manual handling risks in the health and aged care sector. The report “VHIA Design Advisory Service" illustrates that the design of workplaces in the health industry is critical in achieving sustained improvements in occupational health and safety. By introducing better design, risks to health and safety can be reduced by identifying issues at the earliest point.

Three solution sheets were developed with the support of WorkSafe Victoria that complement "Designing workplaces for safer handling of patients and residents". Refer to these sheets for a focus on specific design topics:

  • Overhead tracking for safe people handling
  • Addendum - Installing structural ceiling supports for overhead tracking

Further information

This publication may contain references to the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1985 (1985 Act) or to a Code of Practice. On 1 July 2005, the 1985 Act was replaced by the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (2004 Act). Also, Codes of Practice will be reviewed and replaced with guidance material or, in appropriate cases, with Compliance Codes that provide greater certainty about what constitutes compliance.

WorkSafe Victoria will review and amend this publication, or replace it with new guidance material that will reflect the provisions in the 2004 Act. In the meantime, it is important you reference the 2004 Act to ensure that you meet any new or changed duties. Codes of Practice will continue to be a source of practical guidance for those who have OHS duties.

The 2004 Act also repeals the Occupational Health and Safety (Incident Notification) Regulations 1997. For details of your duties in the event of an incident, from 1 July 2005 you should refer to the 2004 Act.
