Treating injured workers

Injured workers seeking treatment for a work-related injury or illness are able to choose their own healthcare provider.

Following a work-related injury or illness, a worker can access medical and some healthcare services immediately without a medical practitioner referral or initial approval from their WorkSafe Agent. These services include:

  • Ambulance
  • Chiropractic services
  • Dental services
  • Family counselling
  • Medical services
  • Optometry
  • Osteopathy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Podiatry

WorkSafe provides a range of tools and information to assist you in treating an injured worker. Normally, an injured worker will require approval from their WorkSafe Agent before you can begin treatment.

WorkSafe expects that the professional conduct of providers treating injured workers will be in line with the standards set by the relevant professional body. WorkSafe regularly reviews services billed by providers against these professional standards.
