Your legal duties

New regulations for Occupational Health and Safety came into effect on 1 July 2007.

The OHS Regulations apply to situations where a person can fall more than two metres. These obligations, amongst other specific hazards, are addressed in Chapter 3 of the regulations.

The regulations impose specific obligations on employers. Visit the employers and employees section of this guide for details of duties relating to falls.

What's New

The definition of 'emergency service employee' has been changed to make it clear that the regulations do not apply to volunteers.

Note that employers and self-employed persons still have a duty to volunteers under the OHS Act. The Act requires employers and self-employed persons to protect the health and safety of people from risks associated with their organisation's operations.
