Storage and racking

Overloaded and/or damaged storage racking and shelving can collapse, causing serious injuries to employees. Employees can also be injured if they are struck by objects falling off shelving.

Getting started

  • Maintain racking systems in good condition. Repair or replace damaged shelves and racks.
  • Display the manufacturer's specified safe working load (SWL) on racking and shelving. Know the weight limit for mezzanine floors if they are used for storage.
  • Make sure the total weight is even and stable, and doesn't exceed the specified SWL.
  • Provide safe access to and in storage areas.
