Construction is one of the fastest growing industries in Victoria, employing around 275,000 workers.
While significant safety improvements have been made, the number of deaths, injuries and near miss incidents remain too high. Each week, around 60 construction workers are injured seriously enough that they have to stop work. These injuries commonly occur as a result of basic site safety failings.
Construction work can be high risk and WorkSafe is committed to improving safety in the industry.
Construction Safety Focus
The Construction Safety Focus is a three year, state-wide safety campaign targeting the known causes of death and serious injury in the construction industry. Commencing July 2016, WorkSafe inspectors will visit sites focusing on a specific hazard, issue or sector, assessing safety measures and providing information to builders and sub-contractors on risk control measures.
The Safety Focus areas include*:
- Prevention of falls
- Safe Worker and Traffic (SWAT) campaign
- Musculoskeletal injury prevention
- Hire yards
- Falling objects
- Electrical safety
- Powered mobile plant interface
- Construction Regulations compliance .
