Contractor management/labour hire

Many farms engage specialist contractors and labour hire workers in addition to permanent staff to do certain kinds of work, including one-off jobs such as picking, shearing and seasonal work. Contractors may also include labour hire staff or temporary staff provided by an employment agency.

Even though farms may not directly employ these workers, they still have a responsibility to protect contractors' health and safety while they are under the farms's management and control.

Farms should:

  • develop selection procedures to ensure that contractors have appropriate health and safety management systems in place, particularly in high-risk areas such as construction
  • ensure that all contractors receive proper induction and OHS training before they start work
  • meet with the contractors' direct employer to clarify who is responsible for day-to-day management of the work site, ongoing supervision and implementing risk control measures.
