OHS Professionals
There are more than 1100 occupational health and safety (OHS) practitioners in Victoria offering a variety of services - from general advice on safety matters to providing specialty services focused on a single aspect of OHS such as asbestos control, dangerous goods or air monitoring.
Victorian employers rely on these OHS professionals to help them assess and manage their OHS issues. Although OHS professionals play a vital role, the consistency of services can vary between providers.
WorkSafe is working with the OHS community to ensure that Victoria’s OHS community provides quality and consistent services. WorkSafe recently released its Position to help Victorian employers get the right health and safety advice from in-house OHS Managers and external OHS consultants.
A handbook has also been developed for employers, Getting help to improve health and safety , to provide more detail on getting help, building OHS skills, the types of consultants and professional associations available and how best to work with OHS consultants.
The information below will help you to understand WorkSafe’s ‘Repositioning the OHS professional’ strategy and how it will affect you.
