About The Sector
The hospitality industry includes hotels, restaurants, pubs and clubs. These workplaces range from small family-run restaurants and bed and breakfast houses to large luxury hotels with casinos and banquet facilities.
The vast majority of people working in this industry are part-time and work late nights and weekends. Staff turnover is high, and safety training is often minimised in the rush to get staff ready to work. Many of the workers in this industry are young and inexperienced, while others have limited English skills.
The hospitality industry has similarities with other industries such as:
- fast food
- food manufacturing
- cleaning
- garbage collection and recycling
- public events
- administration
- health and aged care
