About the sector

Manufacturing is one of Victoria’s largest and most diverse industries. Victoria’s
17 000 manufacturers are vital to Victoria’s economy:

  • employing more than 336 000 Victorians
  • exporting goods worth more than $14.6 billion to countries throughout the world
  • contributing more than $26 billion to Australia’s economy

Most of Victoria's manufacturing companies make components - manufactured parts and elements known as assemblies - that are used by other manufacturers and progressively turned into a huge range of motor vehicles, electrical goods, clothing or food products.

The people working in manufacturing industries are as diverse as the products they make, ranging from young workers such as trainees and apprentices, to highly skilled tradespeople. In some sectors, a significant number of people speak languages other than English.
