Employees

Your employer is required to protect you from any risks to your health and safety.

At the same time, you must:

  • wear or use personal protective equipment or rescue equipment provided to you
  • follow instructions issued by the operator of the mine
  • immediately alert co-workers of any mining hazard you become aware of and inform the operator if you observe any person who appears to be a danger to anyone at the mine
  • not enter or remain in the mine if affected by alcohol or drugs, or take these into the mine
  • take appropriate action if an incident occurs in accordance with instruction or training received

Employees must also participate in testing of the emergency plan for a prescribed mine. You must follow the emergency plan when it is activated and immediately inform the operator of any circumstances that could be a major mining hazard.
The employer(s) at prescribed mines must also develop a safety role for employees covering how employees will work with the employer to achieve safe operation. The safety role includes procedures for employees to follow to assist the operator to:

  • identify mining hazards at the mine
  • conduct safety assessments
  • adopt, review or test risk control measures
  • establish and implement a safety management system.
