About the industry

The quarrying industry has inherent risks because of the varied nature of the work and the environment in which it is carried out.

Incidents involving the operation and maintenance of fixed and mobile plant, falls from height and explosions can place people’s lives at risk. These incidents can have catastrophic results.

Historically, the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) administered occupational health and safety (OHS) for Victoria’s resource industries, including quarrying. However, WorkSafe took over the administration of OHS in Victoria’s resource industries on 1 January 2008. For more information on this transition, refer to the Memorandum of Understanding between DPI and WorkSafe.
