WorkSafe issues wild weather warning

25 June 2008

Forecast high winds today should prompt builders and sub-contractors to ensure construction sites are not exposed to the risk of structural collapse in storm force winds predicted today.

“With the prospect of high winds, builders and developers must ensure uncompleted buildings and structures are well supported,” WorkSafe’s Executive Director John Merritt said.

“Walls and scaffolding must be adequately braced until work is completed. Roofing and other building material that could be picked up by the wind must also be secured.

”The risk is not just to the workforce, but passers-by, neighbouring premises and emergency service workers who may be called if there is an incident."

“Strong winds can be expected at any time of year in Victoria, consequently uncompleted work should be properly braced at all times.

“Failing to do so can have serious human, legal and commercial consequences,” Mr Merritt said.
