What are the risks?
This work is heavy and it is common for workers in distribution centres and warehouses to handle several tonnes of boxes and packages each day. Consequently, hazardous manual handling injuries account for the vast majority of injuries in the storage and warehousing industry.
Injuries typically occur when workers lift heavy or awkward items, as well as when they carry out repetitive actions such as stacking items on pallets. The risks are made worse if these jobs are carried out over long periods, at a fast pace or in difficult conditions.
Other causes of injury include slips and trips, falls from height and being hit by falling goods or moving objects.
