Return to work is a team effort involving the injured worker, their treating health practitioner, the employer and colleagues in the workplace, and the WorkSafe Agent.

Returning to safe work forms a key part of the recovery process. The earlier the worker can begin on the return to work process, the more successful it is likely to be.

Early intervention does not always mean getting the injured worker back to work early. It's about providing support to the worker as soon as possible after the injury and demonstrating a commitment to their return to work.

Why it's so important to get an injured worker back to work

You play a key role in assisting injured workers to return earlier, to safe and sustainable work. The benefits of playing an active role are:

  • Your workers (who are vital to your business' success) will recover faster after injury
  • You retain the skills and knowledge of your injured workers
  • You reduce the costs of lost productivity
  • You reduce the costs of recruiting and training new staff to cover the role
  • You help build morale in the workplace by showing all employees that the injured worker is valued
  • You reduce the impact of the claim on your WorkCover Insurance premium.

You have legal obligations under the Workplace Injury, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2013.

  • Your worker doesn't need to be 100 per cent recovered to return to work. Returning to work is actually an important part of their recovery
  • Whether it's reduced hours in their regular job or suitable, alternative duties, getting your worker back to work is an important part of their rehabilitation while they are recovering.

So, the earlier you start supporting your injured worker with returning to work, the better the outcome for everyone involved.
