Driver safety when prescribing medicinal cannabis

Background

WorkSafe regards fitness to drive as a core patient safety consideration and an integral part of clinical care. Treating healthcare practitioners must consider any underlying medical conditions and treatment-related impairment when assessing a patient’s fitness to drive. Victorian law prohibits driving with a detectable amount of THC (a psychoactive component of cannabis) or while impaired by any substance. This includes prescribed medicinal cannabis.

Transport Victoria provides clinical tools and resources to support your assessment of a patient’s fitness to drive and to help you explain drug driving laws. We encourage you to discuss the risks with patients using medicinal cannabis.
