Three charges have been filed at the Heidelberg Magistrates Court under section 21 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, for failing to maintain a working environment that was safe and without risks to health.

The charges relate to an incident in which a nurse was assaulted by a patient at Austin Health's Secure Extended Care Unit in Heidelberg on 18 October 2017.

The nurse suffered head, face and body injuries, requiring hospital treatment.

WorkSafe alleges Austin Health failed to provide and maintain a safe workplace and provide information to reduce this risk.

The matter will be heard at Heidelberg Magistrates Court on 28 August.
