Hospital charged after patient death in care

WorkSafe has charged St Vincent’s Hospital following the death of a patient in Fitzroy.

St Vincent’s Hospital (Melbourne) Limited is facing two charges under section 23(1) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act for failing to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that persons other than employees were not exposed to health and safety risks.

The patient took their own life after they were admitted for treatment in the hospital’s Acute Inpatient Service area in February 2024.

The matter is listed for a filing hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 17 February 2026.
