Worker charged over alleged compensation fraud

WorkSafe has charged a worker with allegedly obtaining more than a quarter of a million dollars in fraudulent workers compensation and superannuation payments while working.

The 42-year-old Melton man faces a total of eight charges, including three charges of obtaining financial advantage by deception under section 82(1) of the Crimes Act and four charges under section 585(1) of the Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act for providing false or misleading information.

WorkSafe alleges that between October 2021 and May 2025, the worker received WorkCover payments totalling $251,001 while failing to declare that he was working during this period.

The worker faces an additional charge for providing false or misleading declarations in breach of section 585(3)(d) of the WIRC Act.

It is alleged that between October 2023 and April 2025, the worker submitted certificates of capacity falsely declaring that he had not worked.

The matter is listed for a filing hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 8 October 2026.
