Compliance code: Engineered stone - Key changes

The Engineered stone compliance code (Edition 3) came into effect on 17 April 2025. It replaces the Managing exposure to crystalline silica: Engineered stone compliance code (Edition 2, 2022), which was revoked on 1 July 2024.

Change summary

The code aligns with changes to the OHS Regulations made by the Occupational Health and Safety (Engineered Stone Prohibition) Regulations 2024 which took effect on 1 July 2024.

The code explains that the amended OHS Regulations:

  • ban work involving the manufacture, supply, processing and installation of engineered stone benchtops, panels or slabs
  • outline exceptions (including specified work relating to already installed engineered stone products) and an exemption to the engineered stone ban.

The code explains that duty holders performing work related to the exceptions, or with engineered stone products not prohibited by the ban, must use specific risk control measures for ‘high risk crystalline silica work’ outlined in the OHS Regulations.

Sections of the code dealing with control measures have been updated to relate to engineered stone work that is not prohibited.
