IME – Medical practitioners service fees effective from 1 November 2025

WorkSafe will pay up to a maximum amount for the following categories of service.

Complex examination and report:

Inclusive of reading time (up to 200 pages), conducting the examination, report writing and any incidentals (such as postage, photography and faxing services). Diagnostic tests (such as X-rays) carried out as a necessary part of the examination are not included in the examination and report item code and will be reimbursed in accordance with WorkSafe policies, the relevant Medicare Benefit Schedule item code and WorkSafe's Reimbursement Rates for Medical Practitioners.

Complex examination and reports are limited to the following:

EITHER: It is for one of the following requests:

  • Spinal surgery requests (orthopaedic surgeons only)
  • Implantable Pain Therapy request

OR: the request for the report meets THREE OR MORE of the following criteria:

  1. There are extensive causation or liability questions, with at least 3 separate (and specific) questions included.
  2. There are extensive work capacity questions, with at least 3 separate (and specific) questions included.
  3. Where the IME is asked to give an opinion on a specific treatment request referred by a WorkSafe Agent.
  4. Where the IME is asked to give an opinion on a specific surgery request referred by a WorkSafe Agent.
  5. The worker has multiple ‘approved’ injuries (prior to the IME) involving more than one body system – (Body System list - Circulatory, Respiratory, Digestive, Nervous, Muscular, Skeletal, Endocrine, Urinary, Reproductive, Lymphatic (Immune), Integumentary)
  6. There is a secondary injury that requires a liability determination.

Only payable for WorkSafe Agent referred complex examination and report assessments. The WorkSafe Agent and IME must agree to the Complex examination prior to accepting the referral.

- Applies when a WorkSafe Agent has requested IME to complete any type of exam and provide the report to the WorkSafe Agent within 2 business days. The WorkSafe Agent and IME must agree to the expedited time frame prior to accepting the referral.

Calculated in 15 minute blocks. Travel only paid when travelling to a location other than IME's registered practice location/s. Travel for multiple assessments in the one location should be charged on a pro-rata basis across each claim.

Supplementary report:
Applies where a WorkSafe Agent has requested additional response from the IME that was not requested in the initial IME referral. Supplementary reports may be requested when Agents:
- provide additional information not initially provided which may impact IME opinion
- ask additional questions that were not included in initial referral
The IME must have examined the injured worker within the last 6 months. An IME is not required to conduct a re-examination (or re-contact) the injured worker in order to provide the additional information.

Complex examination and reports can only be requested in the following circumstances:

The request for the report meets FOUR OR MORE of the following criteria:

  1. There are extensive causation or liability questions, with at least 3 separate (and specific) questions included.
  2. There are extensive work capacity questions, with at least 3 separate (and specific) questions included.
  3. Where the IME is asked to give an opinion on a specific treatment request referred by a WorkSafe Agent.
  4. Complex mental health history (diagnosis of two or more separate mental health conditions or previous mental health hospital admissions, history of self- harm or suicide behaviours, personality disorders).
  5. Complex psycho-social factors.
  6. Complex psycho-tropic medication profiles.
  7. Medication review.
  8. There is a secondary mental injury that requires a liability determination.

Only payable for WorkSafe Agent referred complex examination and report assessments. The WorkSafe Agent and IME must agree to the Complex examination prior to accepting the referral.
