Secure worksites during extreme winds

Victorians are being urged to ensure worksites are secure as strong winds gusting up to 100kmh hit parts of the state today.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a weather warning for damaging winds across Victoria’s south west, central, west Gippsland and alpine regions.

WorkSafe’s Construction Program Manager Dermot Moody said high winds were particularly dangerous if building materials and temporary structures were not adequately secured.

He said even large objects such as shipping containers could be toppled by strong winds if not secured correctly.

“Buildings under construction, temporary fencing and materials such as roofing sheets and scaffold planks can be turned into deadly, flying objects if they are not correctly secured,” Mr Moody said.

“Where there is a risk of objects being blown around, there is a risk that workers and the general public will be harmed.”
