Premium guideline: Owner drivers

How to tell whether an owner driver counts as a worker for compensation purposes.

Shape

What it contains

An unincorporated owner driver is considered to be a worker of a hirer for WorkCover insurance purposes unless the work is part of the driver’s independent trade or business.

This document outlines how WorkSafe decides whether the owner driver is operating an independent trade or business - for example, by looking at whether they subcontract relief drivers, and how much of their work comes from a single hirer.

It also shows how to calculate deductions for an owner driver.
