This guidance note replaces a previously issued safety alert titled 'Using workboxes to lift personnel - Braking and operational requirements for cranes'.

It has been created following changes to Australian Standards, the advancement in crane technology and load monitoring devices, and the ongoing risks associated with using crane-lifted work boxes.

This guidance explores the important considerations that must be addressed before deciding to use crane-lifted work boxes, including:

  • design of the work box and crane
  • inspection and maintenance
  • system of work, and
  • emergency plan

The guidance note also provides a list of WorkSafe and external resources, including Australian Standards, for further reading.
