Applied Mental Health Leadership
A project using a digital platform to support University leaders to develop their skills in building mentally healthy workplaces.

Empowering leaders deal with mental health in the workplace
AP Psychology & Consulting Services are developing a scalable and evidence-based solution to build psychologically safe and thriving teams. The Applied Mental Health Leadership (AMHL) project is focused on the University sector with five large universities participating in the pilot.
About the project
The AMHL project aims to achieve the following outcomes:
- increased leadership commitment to building better work cultures and psychologically safe places to work
- enhanced capability and confidence of leaders to support and protect the psychological safety and mental health of their employees through a digital intervention that promotes practical improvements to workplace factors and practices to support psychological safety and mental health
- improved leadership and employee awareness of the work-related factors that underpin psychological safety and impact mental health in the workplace through gamified and socially incentivised learning and practice
The AMHL project will be delivered in two phases over two years.
Project delivery
This phase involves tailored leadership training that is focused on building important knowledge and skills for leaders in support of creating psychologically safe and thriving workplaces and addressing work-related factors that impact mental health. The focus area for the training will be informed by an evidence based best practice model as well as by the development of a sector risk profile that is informed by quantitative data collected through a purpose built tool called the Workplace Psychological Safety Index (WPSI) and qualitative data collected through focus groups.
This phase will be delivered through an innovative digital platform that will allow leaders and employees to not only build their skills and knowledge but also to interact and collaborate in real time on addressing the work-related factors that are most relevant to the university sector and on applying practical strategies towards creating more psychologically safe and thriving teams.
