Participatory design of mentally healthy work

A project that aims to create a system that measurably improves the mental health of frontline workers by eliminating or reducing psychological risk factors. Proudly funded by WorkSafe’s WorkWell Mental Health Improvement Fund.

Protecting the mental health of firefighters

The Australian Workers' Union (AWU) is working with employees, leaders and Health and Safety Representatives at the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning (DELWP) to improve the systems in place to support the mental health of working firefighters.

About the project

Project partner RMIT will engage with frontline firefighters using a participatory approach to identify and inform the development of targeted interventions. With the support of DELWP, strategies will be implemented and evaluated in participating workgroups, involving up to 250 firefighters. Project findings will benefit DELWP's leaders and employees, and support a culture that promotes positive mental health and the prevention of mental injury.
