Questions for your first day at work

You might have a lot of questions about your new job on the first day. Here’s a few things you can ask, if they haven't been mentioned in your induction.

As you read the questions, think about how you would say them in your own way.

Go-to people at work

  • Who do I ask about my hours/pay/leave/breaks?
  • Who would I ask if I need to change my shifts or availability?
  • Do we have a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) or safety rep?
  • Who do I tell if I’m uncomfortable with a staff member/customer?

Doing your job

  • Risks of my job (Is there anything you think I should watch out for in my role?)
  • What do I do if I see something unsafe?
  • Can you please show me how to do ………… again?

Questions that make you go UMM...

  • Who do I ask if I need to go to the bathroom?
  • What do I do if I need to take a break?
  • If I’m not sure about how to do something, where can I go for help?

Bonus questions

  • Can you please send me/print out the induction information?
